Today we're going to talk about the main European Union Institutions and how they work.

To start with, let's watch this short video to revise what the European Union is and its origins:

So, how many countries are there in the EU after the UK's departure?
The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership of 27 democratic countries.

There are seven institutions involved in running the European Union.
But today we're going to learn about three of them:

The European Commission:
Members ➞ is made up of 27 commissioners, one from each EU country.
Role ➞ proposes new laws for the EU.
Location➞ is based in Brussels (Belgium).

The European Parliament:
Members ➞ 705 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament). Members elected every 5 years by EU citizens.
Role➞ Discusses ans approves new laws.
Location➞ is based in Strasbourg (France) and Brussels (Belgium).

The Council of the European Union :
Members ➞ is made up of government ministers from each EU country, according to the policy area to be discussed. There are no fixed members of the EU Council. Depending on the affair, each country sends their minister responsible for that policy area (for example, Minister of Education, Minister of Justice...)

Role  Discusses and passes new laws
Location ➞ is based in Brussels (Belgium).

Read and learn in what order these EU institutions work:
1.  The European Commission meets in Brussels. 

2.  27 commissioners discuss what is best for the EU. 
3.  They propose and draft new laws. 
4.  Proposals for new laws are sent to the European Parliament. 
5.  MEPs meet in Strasbourg to discuss proposed laws. 
6. Small changes are made to proposed laws.
7. The European Parliament approves new laws after changes.
8. The European Parliament sends approved laws to the Council of the European Union. 
9.  The Council of the European Union votes on proposed laws.
10. The Council of the European Union passes new laws with a majority of yes votes. 
11. The EU member states accept the new laws.
