The topic of today's lesson is WHAT'S A DEMOCRACY?
Spain is a democratic state. But what does democracy mean? Let's try to figure it out today.
The word democracy comes from Greek:
"demos"→people and "kratos" → power. So it literally means "Power belongs to People"
It's based on dialogue and respect for different ideas.
Democracy is a form of govenment that guarantees freedom, justice and equality to its people.
Equality means that everybody has the same rights (derechos). Rights are things that we can do freely.
But apart from rights, living in a democracy also brings things that we must do. Things that we must do are responsibilities or duties (deberes).
So in a democracy people have both rights and responsibilities.
The Spanish Constitution of 1978 establishes the rights and responsibilites of its citizens.
Read this leaflet and learn some of these rights and responsibilities.
Now open your book on page 6. Listen and read "What's a democracy?" to find out more about our rights and duties.
