TECHNICAL DRAWING

The theme of today's lesson is ART and GEOMETRY.
Have you ever been to the Great Mosque of Cordoba or the Alhambra in Granada? Has your attention been drawn to the geometrically patterned mosaics used to decorate walls, ceilings, fountains, floors, pools and even tables?
All these patterns represent the Moorish or Islamic Art that form part of the cultural heritage of Spain.

Later, it was developed into the Mudejar Art, a style which is native and unique to the history of Spain. It was a meeting point between Christianity and Islam as it was a style of ornamentation used in Iberian Christian kingdoms but that incorporated decorative motifs and techniques developed by Muslims.

You can find the examples of Mudejar architecture all over the Iberian peninsula. (click on the images to enlarge them)

Can you imagine that all these fascinating works of art were created with a simple compass, a ruler and some knowledge of Basic Geometry?!  Watch this video to see what is the basis of these intricate designs.

So, as you have seen everything starts with a circle and the division of a circle in different sections. During our Art and Crafts lessons we are going to create one of these intricate designs.
And we’re going to start from the very beginning.

Today we’re going to learn how to draw the perpendicular bisector (la mediatriz) of a segment. (Trazar la mediatriz de un segmento. La mediatriz es la perpendicular a un segmento en su punto medio.)
You will need: a compass, a pencil, a rubber, a ruler, a pencil sharpener, a piece of paper.
How can you bisect a segment?
Watch this video that explains how to draw the bisector of a segment.
Follow these steps to bisect a segment:
- Step 1: Use your ruler to draw a line segment AB of length 8 cm.
- Step 2: Hold the point of your compass at a point A. Open your compass to a radius that is more than half the length of segment AB. Draw one arc above the line segment and one below it.
- Step 3: Now place your compass on point B. With the same radius, trace two more arcs. They should cut the first two arcs. Label the intersection points: C and D. (image 1)
- Step 4: Use your ruler and joint points C and D with a straight line. This line is the perpendicular bisector of segment AB. (image 2)

To practise a little bit more, I want you to draw the bisector of two more line segments:
- 1 segment of length 4 cm,
- 2 segment of length 10 cm.

So, at the end of the lesson you should have three bisectors. (Tenéis que trazar  tres mediatrices de tres segmentos de 8, 4, 10 cm).
Write your name, the date and put your worksheet in a folder. You are going to show it to me when we are back to school.
